What if I was to tell you that you could enjoy the best tasting breakfast sandwich, while also staying healthy? You might think that is too good to be true. But, in fact, you can do just that by following this savory Keto “Smash” Sausage Breakfast Sandwich recipe!
What is a Keto Smash Sausage Breakfast Sandwich?
The same process that applies to a smash burger, can also be applied to breakfast sausage. I had no idea this was possible. But, the more I thought about it, the more sense it made!
Smashing the patty introduces extra flavor and texture. The exact same method that makes a smash burger tastes so good, can be applied to breakfast sausage.
Now, I know what you are thinking, “won’t smashing the sausage release all of the natural juices?” Generally this is true! However, in this case, you are cooking the meat so fast that it has no time to dry out.

Best way to Cook a Keto Smash Sausage Breakfast Sandwich
The Maillard Reaction:
The best way is to maximize flavor when cooking meat is to utilize the Maillard Reaction. The Maillard reaction (also known as the “Browning Process”) is a chemical reaction between protein and sugars that gives browned food its distinctive flavor.
To increase surface area for maximum browning, we smash the patty as thin as possible. By increasing the Maillard Reaction when cooking the meat, we add a richness to the sausage.

Why Almond Flour Biscuits?
Baking with almond flour
Almond flour is the best. Using it to make homemade Keto biscuits is super easy. They taste delicious and add a nice light texture to the breakfast sandwich. I wish I had known about it sooner!
Almond flour contains less carbohydrates, less processed sugar, and more healthy fats than wheat flour. It is also gluten free, and provides plenty of prebiotic dietary fiber. That means that almond flour can aid in weight loss!
With all of the numerous pros to baking with almond flour, it is obvious why this is a great healthy alternative to wheat flour. And is the perfect candidate for making our Keto biscuits!
The Perfect Egg
I discovered this trick while getting out some mason jars for my Overnight Oats recipe. I realized you can remove the center part of the lid, leaving only the metal rim. Turns out that the rim makes for a perfect fried egg!
Sure, you can purchase pre-made Egg Rings or a Culinary Steel Ring Mold. But for those that do not want to spend extra money, and have extra mason jars, this is a perfect hack!
Follow these simple steps for a perfect fried egg:
- Spray the rim of the mason jar lid or comparable ring.
- Place the ring in a pan and heat over low-medium heat.
- Crack an egg inside of the lid or ring.
- Cover, and allow to cook until yolk is cooked to your preference.
- About 2 to 3 minutes for runny yolk, 4 minutes or more for firmer yolk.
- Remove lid or ring with the corner of a spatula.
Tools for Keto Smash Sausage Breakfast Sandwich
Tools you will need:
To make the perfect keto smash sausage, you will need a few tools:
- First, you will need an offset spatula.
- A standard spatula will also work. But the offset will help keep your hands away from the super hot griddle or skillet
- Next, you will need some parchment paper.
- This will help to keep the sausage from sticking to the burger smasher.
- Griddle or cast-iron skillet.
- You can use any pan that you have, but cast-iron will be the best for conducting constantly high heat.
- And last but not least, you will need a burger smasher.
- This can be anything from a heavy frying pan, to a burger press or specially made burger smasher.
Where to find the tools:
I purchased all the tools (pictured above) directly from Amazon. But, you can most likely find at a restaurant supply store as well!
When I first started, I purchased a tile trowel from the hardware store. As a result, the patty did not quite come out how I was expecting. The trowel was not wide enough, so I could not get a good smash. So, of course, I turned to the internet!
That is where I discovered the burger smasher. I highly recommend a burger smasher, as they make the process quick and simple. A burger smasher is great because it gives you the required leverage, while keeping your hand away from the heat source.
How to Cook Keto Smash Sausage Breakfast Sandwich
“In the end, I don’t care how my breakfast sandwich is served, as long as its with some fried cheese“
- Start by forming equal sized balls of ground breakfast sausage.
- Return to the fridge for 30 minutes.
- Heat the griddle or skillet over medium-high heat.
- Add ground sausage ball to skillet, and allow to cook undisturbed for 30 seconds.
- Place the parchment paper on the bottom of the burger smasher.
- Using a burger smasher, smash the ball into a thin patty.
- Push down on the patty with all your weight when smashing. For about 10-15 seconds
- Allow the sausage patty to sear for 2 minutes (until edges start to brown).
- Flip the sausage patty and cook for 1 minute.
- Remove the sausage patty.

Equipment
- Burger Smasher
- Spatula (offset is preferred)
- Non Stick Spray
- Parchment Paper
- Egg ring or mason jar lid
Ingredients
- 1 lb Sausage ground, breakfast style
- 4 whole Eggs
- 4 slices Cheddar cheese
Instructions
Smash Sausage
- Form equal sized balls of ground breakfast sausage
- Place in fridge for 30 minutes or longer
- After at least 30 minutes, heat the griddle or skillet over medium-high heat
- Add sausage ball to skillet, and allow to cook undisturbed for 30 seconds.
- Place parchment paper on the bottom of the burger smasher
- Using a burger smasher, smash the ball into a thin patty
- Allow the sausage patty to sear for 2 minutes (until edges start to brown)
- Flip the sausage patty and cook for 1 minute
- Remove the sausage patty and allow to cool for 2 minutes before serving
Fried Egg
- Spray the rim of the mason jar lid or comparable culinary ring
- Place lid or ring in pan and heat over medium-low heat
- Crack egg inside of lid or ring
- Cover, and allow to cook until yolk is cooked to your preference *
- Remove lid or ring with corner of spatula
