The Health Benefits of Chef Kevin’s Popcorn
Making your own pop corn at home is a simple and cheap way to enjoy a healthy snack. Sure, buying self-popped pop corn bags and throwing them in the microwave is a little easier.
But just lookup the term ‘popcorn lung’ and you will be more than happy to spend the extra 30 seconds to pop your own kernels at home. Plus, this will keep you away from harmful chemical flavorings like diacetyl.
Kernels:
Popcorn kernels have all the characteristics of a healthy snack. They are relatively low calorie and have low energy density per kernel.
Additionally, the kernels contain a healthy amount of fiber per serving. Fiber will help you feel more full and can aid in weight loss.
I use this microwave popcorn popper which is relatively inexpensive, and makes the best at home popcorn. Popping you own kernels at home can be a simple and healthy addition to any diet!
Olive Oil
In order to pop your own kernels at home, fat plays a vital role. I have tried everything from butter to ghee, but find that olive oils works best.
Not only does it produce the best kernel but also has many health benefits on its own. Olive Oil is packed full of healthy Monounsaturated fats and antioxidants.
Old Bay Seasoning:
A popular seasoning in the North East which usually accompanies all types of crab and lobster dishes. This spice blend plays an important role in my popcorn seasoning recipe.
Consisting of celery salt, red and black pepper, and paprika. Old Bay seasoning adds color and complex flavors that will make your popcorn explode with flavor!
Monk Fruit:
Monk fruit is a low glycemic, zero calorie, all natural sugar substitute. Because of this, it is a great candidate for the Paleo diet.
Cooking with monk fruit is simple. It is a direct 1 for 1 substitute for sugar. This means there is no guess work when adding to a recipe. Thanks for keeping it simple, Monk Fruit!
Also, unlike most sweeteners, monk fruit will not cause a spike in blood sugar levels. There are even some studies illustrating that it can help to lower blood sugar levels.
